In December, 1923, thirty-four businessmen joind together to start the Elkhart Lions Club. On April 17, 1924, Melvin Jones presented the club with its new charter from the International Association of Lions Clubs in a ceremony held in Chicago.
The Elkhart Lions Club has continued since that time with a special focus on helping people who are visually challenged. The Elkhart Lions was one of the founding organizations that worked to form the Indiana Lions Eye Bank. Annually, the club provides assistance in the form of eyeglass examinations and prescription eyeglasses for those who meet the qualification guidelines established.
